Following on from our Goli Hospital Project in October 2007, we were excited by yet another project in connection with Bishop Elias Taban... |
|
Jim Herd (a part of our church family) is a solicitor with law firm Morton Fraser and he and 5 other men from East Kilbride decided that climbing Scottish Munros wasn't enough for them! For a total of 8 days from 15th February 2008 Jim and his regular hill-walking companions tackled their biggest climb yet - Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania - which stands at an impressive and daunting 19,340 ft high. While it is not the highest point on earth, it is the tallest free-standing mountain rise in the world with dramatic views over the surrounding plains SUCCESS! Jim and his companions successfully reached the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro just after dawn on Friday 22nd February 2008. Below is a picture of the 6 men at the summit: |

| Why did Jim do this? As well as being a great personal achievement, Jim and his good friend, Gordon Gracie were primarily raising funds for the building of Nehemiah Secondary School in Yei, Southern Sudan. The other four men on the trip either raised money for the school or Tear Fund. Following on from Calderwood Baptist Church's construction team who were sent out to Goli Hospital last October, we are wanting to further assist Bishop Elias Taban in his work in building up infrastructure and facilities for the people in and around Yei. At present the secondary school children of Yei are taught sitting under a large tree. Bishop Taban works tirelessly with various groups of local people to improve the quality of life for everyone and this is his next big project following on from the hospital. The turbulent political situation in Sudan between the North and South means that no investment is being made into education in many parts of the country |
| Fundraising... Jim and Gordon covered their own expenses on this African adventure and all money raised via Calderwood Baptist Church goes straight to Bishop Taban for the school building work. Who knows - maybe even another construction team will be sent from our church to help...? Whatever happens over the coming months you can be sure to see the direct impact of the funds raised. |
| Once the total amount raised is known it will be posted here. If you missed your chance to sponsor Jim but still would like to donate either by cash, cheque or credit/debit card please email donations@calderwoodbaptist.co.uk and we will happily assist... |
